Proclamation for Calvin Merritt upon his retirement as head of Passaic City NAACP

PROCLAMATION

            WHEREAS the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic has the desire to recognize Calvin L. Merritt; and

            WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt, who was born and raised in Passaic, is a graduate of Passaic High School and attended Tombrock College and Passaic County Community College, he earned a Certificate of Studies in Labor Relations Management from Rutgers University Management Development Center and he is a veteran who served in the US Army as a Military Policeman in Germany; and  

            WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt is active in Passaic and the surrounding communities and has had many mentors, but he credits his parents, the late Virginia and William L. Merritt for being his main source of motivation and inspiration, they instilled in him at an early age that “you cannot change anything from the outside, you have to be involved,” and together with their spiritual foundation, guidance, and support, he has achieved and accomplished tasks that he and others never thought possible; and  

            WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt has been a member of numerous boards and organizations including The United Passaic Organization Coalition for the Future, Passaic Multi Cultural Committee, A-PLUS (African American Postal League United for Success), The Supreme Court Task Force for Minority Concerns (Passaic County Vicinage) and The Passaic NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), where he served as President for 22 years and is most proud of the Passaic NAACP’s Black College Bus Tour, which for 15 years was responsible for motivating, exposing and encouraging more than 900 students to attend HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), and he is a Trustee at The Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Passaic; and

            WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt has been recognized for community service by the Passaic County Community College, the Northern Council of Elks, the Bronze Shields of Passaic County, the New Jersey Modern Beauticians Association, the United Passaic Partnership City Wide Neighborhood Team, the Hispanic Information Center of Passaic, the Passaic Optimist Club and the Passaic County African American Women 100 Plus; and

            WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt retired from the US Postal Service in 2016 after 42 years of employment, during which time he attained the positions of Supervisor Customer Service, Route Inspection Team Leader, Northern New Jersey District Training Facilitator, New York Metro Area & Northern New Jersey District Service Improvement Team, Driver Trainer Examiner-Instructor and Letter Carrier; and

WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt and Sugundia Lewis are the very proud parents of their daughter Nikki Cherelle Merritt; and

WHEREAS Calvin L. Merritt is a most valued and respected associate and friend of many persons in Passaic County which is evidenced by the significant contributions he has made benefiting the citizenry of the County of Passaic;

            NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic that it publicly recognizes Calvin L. Merritt for his genuine interest and concern for the well-being of the citizens of the County of Passaic; and

            BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that this Board extends its sincere best wishes to him for continued good health and happiness.
