County Counsel

The County Counsel is the chief legal advisor to county government.  The Office of the County Counsel is responsible for providing legal representation, advice and assistance to the Board of Chosen Freeholders, all county agencies, and constitutional officers (County Clerk, Surrogate, and Sheriff). The County Counsel heads the county’s Department of Law, which includes the Office of Weights and Measures/ Consumer Protection and County Adjuster.

County Adjuster

The County Adjuster's Office is a statutory office authorized to act in cases of commitments or admission of persons to State, County or private hospitals for the mentally ill. It processes applications to the above named institutions, holds hearings to determine both the legal residence of the patient and the ability of relatives of the patient to contribute toward care and maintenance while hospitalized and presents cases relating to this work before the Courts.

Office of Weights and Measures/ Consumer Protection

The Office of Weights and Measures oversees an inspection and enforcement program that in recent years has had great success in exposing and prosecuting gas stations involved in fraudulent practices. The Consumer Protection Department, working under the Consumer Fraud Act, investigates and mediates complaints by consumers against businesses. Both of these programs are vital in protecting the welfare of consumers in Passaic County.

    A consumer must submit the following:
    1. A Brief explanation of what transpired
    2. Any paperwork backing up their statement with photo copies NOT ORIGINALS.

    5. Complaint must be signed and dated.

    Otherwise, we can not start our mediation process without this information.
