Passaic River Basin Flood Preparedness Workshop
The one-day workshop dedicated the morning to adaptation, meaning flooding impacts and potential solutions. It began with a discussion of the future projections for flooding in the Passaic River Basin, how flooding will impact our communities and infrastructure, and ways we can monitor these impacts. Then, speakers addressed proposed solutions to flooding, and how we can work together to restore the floodplain and make the most out of those restored floodplain lands. The afternoon was dedicated to mitigation strategies, meaning ways that we can minimize the frequency and severity of flood events. Speakers addressed land use regulations, policies, and incentives for stormwater management, as well as green infrastructure tools that have been used across the country to help manage stormwater and improve water quality. The Keynote speaker was Larry Levine, Senior Attorney with the NRDC whose address was entitled, “Rooftops to Rivers: Using Green Infrastructure for Stormwater Management.”

Passaic County would like to thank the PSEG Foundation for underwriting the costs of the Passaic River Basin Flood Preparedness Workshop, as well as the Passaic County Technical Institute for videography and culinary services, and the Passaic County Community College Public Safety Academy for hosting the event.
