S.A.N.E. / S.A.R.T.
This is an innovative and successful program that is designed to assist victims of sexual assault across the lifespan.  The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program is active in 20 counties in New Jersey and have been fully operational in Passaic County since 2003.

The SART/SANE program utilize a victim-centered approach to sexual assault victims. The program maintains a focus on the needs and concerns of the sexual assault victim to ensure the compassionate and sensitive delivery of services in a non-judgmental manner.

Once a victim of sexual assault makes a report, the SART is activated.  The Team consists of a trained police officer, a victim advocate and a forensic nurse with specialized training in interviewing, documenting injury and collection of evidence. The victim is interviewed by the police officer, afforded counseling, support and social services by the victim advocate, and forensic evidence is obtained by the SANE nurse in an effective and sensitive manner. These teams are on-call 24-hours a day. A SANE Coordinator for the county coordinates the program by setting up the on-call rosters and serving as the clinical supervisor for the SANE nurses. The Coordinator ensures coordination and cooperation with all law enforcement agencies, hospitals and advocates in the county

On May 4, 2001, Assembly Bill 2083 was signed into law, providing for the establishment of a statewide SANE program and requiring each county prosecutor to appoint or designate a certified sexual assault nurse examiner to serve as program coordinator for that county. The standards for the programs are outlined in "The Standards for Providing Services to Survivors of Sexual Assault", which were promulgated by the Attorney General’s Office in August of 1998.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office receives a grant from the State Office of Victim Witness Advocacy each year to maintain the SANE/SART program in Passaic County.
