Passaic County Historian
Powers & Responsibilities
In accordance with the provisions of the New Jersey Local Historians Act (N.J.S.A. 40:10A et, seq.), the powers and responsibilities of the county historian are: 
  • Carry out a historical program, including but not restricted to: collecting, preserving, and making available materials relating to the history of the county; the historian shall store such materials in such a manner as to ensure their preservation
  • May research, write, and cause to have published a county or municipal history, and may recommend appropriate historical materials for publication
  • May assist a landmark commission, as well as advise the governing body concerning the acquisition, administration, use, and disposition of any landmark or historic site, including such places in the historian's jurisdiction that are listed for the New Jersey Registrar of Historic Places; such advice may be furnished to the Historic Sites Section, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
  • May assist in projects of commemoration, including the erection of monuments, historic markers, and guide signs

Restoration of County-Owned Properties
Further, the county historian assists the Planning, Parks, and Engineering departments in developing grant applications for the continuing restoration of county-owned historic properties such as the Dey Mansion; General George Washington's military field headquarters in July, October, and November 1780; and Lambert Castle, a Victorian-era mansion leased by the Passaic County Freeholders to the Passaic County Historical Society for museum and library purposes.

The Dey Mansion and Lambert Castle are located, respectively, in Wayne Township and Garret Mountain Reservation in the City of Paterson. Both structures are significant components of the Passaic County parks system.
