Morris Canal Greenway Project
A public meeting will be held on July 11th from 6PM to 8PM to allow public input on the Peckman River Crossing project. The meeting will be held at the Little Falls Civic Center located at 19 Warren Street.

In an effort at historic preservation, environmental protection, and open space preservation, the Planning Department completed a feasibility examining a potential Greenway along the former Morris Canal and Pompton Feeder in Passaic County. The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) Smart Growth Grant Program and the Passaic County Open Space Trust Fund graciously provided funding for feasibility study, which is the first step in a comprehensive long term planning process that will guide the creation of a Greenway in Passaic County.

Morris Canal Working Group
Below is a link to the finished Morris Canal Greenway video produced by the NJTPA! Click the video to learn about the Morris Canal Working Group and its efforts to preserve the historic right of way as a public walking and bicycle route.

Several Working Group members were very helpful in the effort to make this happen – thanks! You can view the video by clicking on the YouTube link below. We encourage you to share and distribute this video and we hope you enjoy watching it!

Feasibility Study
The Morris Canal Greenway Feasibility Study was completed in June 2011 and adopted by the County Planning Board in October 2011 as an element of the county master plan.  The feasibility study includes historical context, a land use inventory, and a proposed route for the Morris Canal Greenway. The route of the Morris Canal Greenway proposed in the feasibility study spans approximately 25.67 miles in seven municipalities. A majority of the proposed greenway (57.7%) is already accessible and walkable, existing or planned parks.

The Passaic County Planning Department is proud to present the Final Morris Canal Greenway Study and appendices.

Greenway Map
The Morris Canal Greenway Status webmap is a live map that shows what segments of the Greenway are completed in Passaic County, and the historic route of the Morris Canal throughout New Jersey. The status of the proposed Greenway is divided into four colors: green signifies the Greenway is complete, yellow signifies the Greenway is publicly accessible but needs improvements and is not yet complete, red signifies the Greenway is not publicly accessible or complete, and orange signifies alternate routes. As additional segments of the Greenway are completed, this webmap will be updated.   ArcGIS Logo.jpg

(Please note: while you are encouraged to use the Greenway segments highlighted in green, you are not permitted to use the Greenway segments highlighted in red).

UPDATE 10/8: The Morris Canal Status layer has been updated, so it now reflects the most current status of the Greenway.
