Passaic County Freeholders Award Open Space Grants

PATERSON - The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders awarded $900,330 in grants to community groups through the Open Space, Farmland, and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The trust fund, created in 1999 by public referendum, is designed to enhance and preserve open space and historic structures throughout the State.

“Open Space provides an array of economic and environmental benefits, including protection of water sources, natural habitat preservation, community enhancement, as well as recreational and educational opportunities for families,” said Freeholder Director Sandi Lazzara. “Since the program’s inception, Passaic County has preserved approximately 2,000 acres of open space and provided funds to several historic destinations such as the Dey Mansion and Historic Courthouse Annex.”

In Passaic County, each of the county’s 16 municipalities and any non-profit can apply to the Passaic County Open Space, Farmland, and Historic Preservation Trust Fund for grant funding each year.

“Over the past 19 years, every municipality in Passaic County and dozens of non-profits have received millions in funding from the Open Space Trust Fund,” said Freeholder John W. Bartlett, “Part of the role of county government is to listen to the unique needs of our municipalities, and provide support wherever we can. These Open Space Awards are a positive example of what can be achieved when Passaic County works together with local governments for the betterment of our citizens.”
