Passaic County Awarded Green Acres Grant Funding

PASSAIC COUNTY AWARDED GREEN ACRES GRANT FUNDING

$1,289,500 in funding secured for improvements to the Passaic County Park System

Paterson, NJ – The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders and Friends of Passaic County Parks, Inc. was awarded grant awards for four improvement projects within the Passaic County Park System by the NJ Green Acres Program.

“The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders is aggressively seeking outside sources of funding to improve and expand recreational opportunities in the Passaic County Park System,” stated Freeholder Pat Lepore. “By securing over $1.3 million dollars in grant funding from the Green Acres Program, Passaic County is continuing its aggressive rehabilitation in our parks and historic sites, and ensuring every family has access to quality recreational facilities. I want to thank Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in this significant investment in Passaic County.”

Since 2014, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders invested over $30 million in improvements to Passaic County’s parks, recreational areas, and historic sites. Currently, there is a park improvement project either under design or in construction within every park, including historic sites in the Passaic County Park System. All four projects are under design and slated for construction in 2020.

“From West Milford to Paterson, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders is improving and expanding recreational facilities in the Passaic County Park System,” stated Freeholder Terry Duffy. “Once completed, the Highlands Preserve athletic fields are going to be transformed with improved drainage, new facilities for spectators, and playground equipment. This is a great day for Passaic County and our children.”

The Passaic County Park System is comprised of 56,837 acres of dedicated park, recreation, and open space areas in Passaic County. Amenities include a 36-hole championship level golf course, hiking trails, athletic fields, nature preserves, and historic sites. Additionally, last month construction began on the Dundee Island Park Project in the City of Passaic, the first riverfront park in the Passaic County Park System. The Friends of Passaic County Parks, Inc. is a non-profit corporation created by the Board of Chosen Freeholders to secure grant funding, private donations, and implement public programming, including the annual Passaic County Fair at Garret Mountain Reservation.
