Under direction, the Supervising Mechanic, Golf Facilities supervises and performs varied mechanical work involved in the repair and maintenance of golf course and turf maintenance equipment: does other related work as required. The Passaic County Parks Department is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide range of diesel-powered golf vehicles and equipment. This position also requires the ability and willingness to work on small engines and grounds maintenance equipment used throughout the county golf course and park system. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and experienced with both heavy-duty diesel equipment and smaller mechanical systems.
This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of golf course, turf, landscape, and construction equipment, including golf carts; reel, rotary, and flail mowers; tractors; sprayers; top dressers; rollers; aerifiers; backhoes; excavators; chippers; stump grinders; trucks; dump trucks; plow trucks; loaders; and other diesel-powered and utility vehicles. Duties include repairing and adjusting cutting mechanisms, sharpening and daily quality checks of mowers to ensure proper height and quality of cut, and performing preventive maintenance and routine servicing on both heavy and small equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, leaf vacuums, and chainsaws. The role involves troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems; repairing or replacing engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and hydraulic components; preparing equipment for seasonal operations; maintaining accurate service records and work orders; assisting with inspections and inventory management; operating tools and diagnostic equipment safely; complying with all county, OSHA, and safety regulations; and responding to emergency repair needs during storms, snow events, or park operations as required.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required; Four (4) years of experience as a golf course mechanic responsible for maintaining and repairing various types of golf course, landscape and turf maintenance equipment; Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic; Demonstrated experience working on small engines and grounds equipment; Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and fuel systems; Ability to read and interpret service manuals and schematics; Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain); Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor conditions year-round.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a municipal, county, or public works setting; CDL (Class B or higher); Experience with snow removal equipment and seasonal fleet operations; Welding or fabrication experience.

Requirements:
Experience: An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in one of the following specialties from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for the formal training: A-1 Engine Repair, A-6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A-8 Engine Performance.
Note: This is a union, Civil Service position offering full County benefits.
Schedule:
April - October: Wednesday through Sunday
November - March: Monday through Friday
Occasional emergency, overtime, and snow operations as required.
License: NJ residency and possession of a NJ Driver’s License is required. County residency is preferred.
