Weights & Measures Apprentice

Under close supervision of a Weights and measures inspector, in a three year training program, perform productive work while receiving training in the following:

  • Inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices using scales, weights, volumetric instruments, and other standard methods to determine accuracy of equipment tested.
  • Inspect commodities and goods in businesses for accuracy concerning net contents and pricing.
  • Investigate consumer complaints and recommend proper remedial action.
  • Prepare reports of inspections and investigations containing observations, findings, conclusions, recommendations and action taken.
  • Collect evidence and file complaints against violators of weights and measures statutes and regulations, and testify in court as witness for the county.
  • Use various types of electronic and manual recording and information systems.

 

Requirements:

Education: High school diploma

Experience:

  • Able to lift and carry 100 lbs.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations of Weights & Measures and explain to interested parties.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written  
  • Ability to handle privileged, confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate and professional manner
  • Excellent organizational skills, record keeping, attention to detail, and time management
  • Proactive, and have the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Team player; provide back-up support when available and as needed

Note: Appointees will be required to successfully complete Weights & Measures training program. 

License: Valid New Jersey drivers license.
