Code Blue Alert

Update 1/2/2026: 
According to the National Weather Service, the forecasted daytime and overnight temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, therefore by authority of the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, the Code Blue Alert that began on Monday, December 29, 2025 will  continue until 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

According to the National Weather Service (1) the temperatures will reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower; and/or (2) will include periods of two (2) hours or more of windfall temperatures of zero degrees Fahrenheit or less. 

Anyone in need of a Warming Center should go directly to one of the Warming Centers listed below. If you are aware of any unsheltered homeless who need assistance, call the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at (973) 389-5951 and advise the dispatcher that there is an at-risk individual in need of a welfare check under the Passaic County Code Blue Alert Plan. Anyone in need of more information, please call 211 or text your zip code to 898-211, and a call specialist will be happy to assist.

Update 12/30/2025: 
According to the National Weather Service, the forecasted daytime and overnight temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, therefore by authority of the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, the Code Blue Alert that began on Monday, December 29, 2025 will remain in effect until further notice.

Temperatures are forecasted to remain at or below 32 degrees continuously at least through Monday, January 5, 2026.  Additional alerts will be issued as National Weather Service forecasts are updated. 

 


Update 12/27/2025:
There is a change to the Code Blue Alert that began on Thursday, December 25, 2025.  Please see below for details.

What is a Code Blue Alert?

A Code Blue alert is declared when temperatures drop below the freezing point and weather conditions pose a danger to at-risk individuals.  The Code Blue Alert allows authorities to take homeless people to local shelters or other agencies, known as Warming Centers.  These shelters make additional beds and space available until conditions improve and the alert is called off.  Anyone in need of a warming center should go directly to one of the warming centers listed below.
