Home MenuLambert Castle
The Passaic County Board of County Commissioners have invested in the ongoing restoration of Lambert Castle. This multi-phase project focuses on preserving the castle’s rich architectural and cultural significance while providing new park amenities for public use. The restoration will ensure Lambert Castle remains a vibrant cultural and educational resource for generations to come.
Summary
Lambert Castle was constructed in 1892 and was once the home and showplace of silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert. Four years later, Lambert added an art gallery and observation tower (“Lambert Tower”). The 53-acre estate originally included the mansion, gatehouse, carriage-green house complex, and formal Italianate gardens. The estate is also one of several rare examples of the fully developed form of castellated residential architecture in America. Lambert Castle is a centerpiece to Garret Mountain Reservation which opened to the public in July 1931. This structure was listed on the National (1976) and New Jersey State Registers of Historic Places (1975) and has served as a landmark destination celebrating art, architecture, and culture of Passaic County. The Castle opened as a museum in 1934 and was the home of the Passaic County Historical Society and County Park Commission for years. The site provides unique recreational, educational, and cultural opportunities for Paterson residents and visitors.
Once the site reopens to the public, the museum and park will be operated and maintained by the County of Passaic. A new archives and library building is planned as the new home of the Passaic County Historical Society.
