Elected to the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners in 2016, Commissioner Director Cassandra “Sandi” Lazzara is a proud Paterson native and a lifelong Passaic County resident whose dedication to public service runs deep. Raised in a family rooted in civic engagement, Director Lazzara was taught from an early age the importance of serving others with integrity, competence and loyalty - values that continue to guide her work today.
As Director, she serves on the Administration & Finance, Budget and Health & Human Services Committees. Over the years, she has also held leadership roles on the Planning and Economic Development Committee and served as a liaison to the Passaic County Open Space and Farmland Preservation Advisory Committee, the Board of School Estimate and the Passaic County Planning Board.
A working mother of two grown sons, Anthony and Joseph, Director Lazzara understands firsthand the challenges families face in today’s economy. She works closely with her colleagues on the Board, the County Administrator and County staff to carefully review expenditures and ensure taxpayers receive the greatest value for every dollar spent.
Director Lazzara brings more than 25 years of experience in education to her role as Commissioner. A strong advocate for children, schools and communities, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology from Montclair State University and a Master of Education in Administration & Supervision from William Paterson University. Her career with the Woodland Park Board of Education included teaching and other leadership roles. She has been deeply involved in education at the local, county, state and national levels, serving as President of the West Paterson/Woodland Park Education Association, a member of the Passaic County Education Association Executive Board and a delegate to the National Education Association. Through it all, Director Lazzara has remained committed to the principles of good government and strong public education.

What’s your favorite spot in Passaic County to unwind and explore?
High Mountain Park Preserve in Wayne. I love visiting the trails with my two dogs, Cosmo and Sassy. It’s the perfect place to enjoy nature, clear your head and appreciate the beauty and tranquility Passaic County has to offer.
What inspired you to get involved in serving our community?
My family’s commitment to service inspired me long before I entered public office. My grandfather immigrated from Sicily in 1902 and was elected Alderman in Paterson’s 7th Ward by 1928. During the Great Depression, he was known for quietly helping neighbors in need, often handing out bread to struggling families.
My father, Joseph A. Lazzara, was elected to the Passaic County Board of Freeholders in 1960 and later served as a State Senator. Public service was a constant presence in our home. As an educator, I was honored to serve the residents of West Paterson/Woodland Park for 25 years, advocating for students, educators and support staff. Giving back has always felt like both a responsibility and a privilege.
What local event or tradition do you never miss?
Passaic County events are truly special to me. I love the parades at Preakness Healthcare, the Halloween and Christmas visits with the Memorial Day Nursery and the swearing-in ceremonies for my fellow Commissioners. In recent years, I’ve also been proud to support and sponsor a team for the Catholic Charities Tank Pull, which raises funds for veterans. It’s a cause close to my heart.
How do you like to spend a perfect day in Passaic County?
A perfect day involves connecting directly with our residents, whether that’s attending community events, supporting outreach efforts like SNAP food distributions or working alongside our incredible County workforce. Helping others and being part of decisions that improve people’s lives is what makes this role so rewarding.
What do you love most about the people and places that make up our community?
Our diversity is one of Passaic County’s greatest strengths. When we work together, the results are powerful. I’m continually inspired by the kindness, resourcefulness and compassion of our residents and County employees. Everything we do - managing services, approving budgets and ensuring efficient operations - is focused on helping our residents live healthy, happy and fulfilling lives.
