Construction Contract Awarded for Dundee Island Park Project

Revitalization of Passaic Riverfront Park set to break ground in September

Paterson, NJ On June 28, 2019, bids were open by the Trust for Public Land for the Dundee Island Park Project, a joint endeavor by the County of Passaic, City of Passaic, and TPL to revitalize a downtrodden park on the banks of the Passaic River in the City of Passaic. Five bids were received, with Flanagan Contracting Group, Inc. being the lowest at $9,184,094.03. The project is being funded by a $5 Million dollar grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Office of Natural Resource Restoration, with the remaining monetary match coming from the Passaic County Open Space, Farmland, and Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the 2019 Passaic County Capital Budget.

“The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders continues to invest and enhance our County’s open space, recreational facilities, and historic sites,” stated Freeholder Director John W. Bartlett. “Dundee Island Park is going to be state of the art – with a new river walk, amphitheater, athletic field, and field house. We are delivering a world class recreation area for residents in the City of Passaic and Passaic County.”

Over the past two years, the County, City, and TPL worked in partnership to engage the community and seek feedback on proposals to redesign Dundee Island Park. After an extensive public outreach and collaborative design process, Dundee Island is going to include the following amenities and improvements:

  • Elevated field house with a concession and restroom facilities
  • Refurbished soccer field
  • Playground and spray park
  • Fitness and exercise equipment area
  • Community garden
  • Boat launch
  • River walk and landscaped improvements to the riparian area, including native planting
  • Ornamental security lighting throughout the entire park
  • Art and place making features, including a sculpture designed by a local artist
  • Amphitheater

“We are another step closer to our new park at Dundee Island along the Passaic River.  I am particularly proud of the community involvement in picking amenities and the steps being taken to expand my vision for Dundee Island and this entire area” said City of Passaic Mayor Hector C. Lora.  “These park improvements are just the beginning of our efforts to upgrade recreational space for all our residents and families.  I am thankful for the partnership with the Passaic County Freeholders in helping fund these park improvements.”

Once completed, Dundee Island Park will be incorporated in the Passaic County Park System and maintained by the Passaic County Parks and Recreation Department.  Construction is scheduled to begin by September 1st.
