Garret Mountain Mountain Phase II Improvement Project

New additions to Garret Mountain were proposed whilst staying true to the Olmsted design

Woodland Park, NJ – On September 25, 2019, Passaic County held a community input meeting at Lambert Castle to brief the public on the newly proposed Garret Mountain Improvement Project - Phase II. The presentation by MKW & Associates, a landscape architecture firm who also took part in the designs for the Dundee Island Improvement Project, included improvements and additions that would be implemented on the Auto Overlook and High Meadow area of the reservation, whilst still staying true to the original Olmsted design.

“The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders is continuing to invest in the Passaic County Park System and Garret Mountain Reservation to protect open space and create new recreational opportunities,” stated Freeholder Pat Lepore. “This public meeting on the Phase II Garret Mountain Improvement Project is an important step to hear input on the County’s conceptual design from our residents. We look forward to continued feedback as the plans develop on this important project.”

The features highlighted in the presentation include:
I. Playground areas for two different age groups (2-5 and 5-12), fitting to the theme of the area, either stone/castle-like and/or wooden
II. Fitness area and equipment for adults
III. Amphitheater with granite block seating to create a casual outdoor performance space
IV. Installment of a bird blind, a shade structure and additional picnic tables
V. Implementation of agriculture to benefit butterflies, birds, pollinators, be deer resistant and rocky soil tolerant
VI. Maximization of accessibility via additional walkways with gentler slopes
VII. Restriping of Auto Overlook to increase accessibility and number of parking spaces
VIII. Restoration of existing walkways/trails
IX. Addition of signage themes (history, birding, geology)

The proposed plans were well received by residents throughout Passaic County who were in attendance.
